Carmilla: A Review

What do vampires, a ragtag group of college students, a roller coaster of a love story, and a college run amuck by the supernatural all have in common? These are the key ingredients to the simultaneously heartfelt and heart-wrenching web series, Carmilla. With a female forward cast and a story told largely through well-acted exposition, this series is bound to leave you in stitches and tears. Buckle up, creampuffs. It’s going to be a wild ride.

Warning: minor spoilers may be afoot. Proceed with caution. You’ve been warned.

I’m just going to start off by saying, wow. I just finished the second season of this series, and let me tell you, dear reader, it is worth the wild ride. But I can’t possibly start at the (current, but not ultimate) end. Let’s...

Baby Steps

Current Jam: Households - Sleeping At Last

This song makes me irrationally emotional. Entirely instrumental, and utterly beautiful.

I’ve been thinking about life a lot recently, especially in the long-term (funny thing about college, it has a way of doing that to people. Can’t imagine why).

Going off on a bit of a tangent, I have to admit that there is a slight bittersweet nostalgia for the simplicity that was high school. Everything was predicable and structured. Even when set free for the three months of sweet bliss that was summer vacation, it was a universal fact that us students would return to the same building with a set of slightly more difficult but as equally unremarkable classes as we had just sat through the previous year. The only thing to prepare for each year was a different set of standardized tests.

Fast forward to college, and suddenly life has taken a completely...

My First Real Awkward Moment at OU (The Uncomfortable Come On)

I want to talk about something that happened to me Friday afternoon of last week. It was very uncomfortable for me and the entire situation was extremely awkward, and is one of the main reasons why I am afraid to be in the OC anytime alone now.

Here’s what happened:

I was sitting in the basement of the OC, on my laptop, minding my own business. I would glance up once in awhile from my work from time to time, just to see who was passing by. During one of these quick glances, I happened to make eye contact with a campus employee who happened to be passing by. So I smiled at him real quick (cause, ya know, I’m a fucking nice person) all lips and no teeth, then resumed my work. While I was typing, I noticed that the guy had slowed down his walk considerably, and was giving me a double and triple-take as he continued around the corner.

That should have been my first clue that something...

End of Week Thoughts, Happenings, My Current Jam, and Other Such Nonsense Pt. 1

My current jam:
“Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane

I’ve decided to try to end every week or so with a post about… Well, anything I guess. I’ll always start the posts with a link to a song that I’ve fallen in love with for the week, and follow that with whatever nonsense is brewing up in my head. So yeah, here’s part one. Woo!

This week wasn’t one of my best. I was incessantly bored, lonely, the works. (And before I get into an emotional rant, let me say that I do realize that this is a public outlet. Anyone with access to the URL could read this at will. Sometimes I tend to lash out and say stuff that I don’t mean when I’m angry or upset about something. This particular moment doesn’t exactly fall under that category; I’m just giving a warning for future references. I don’t need to justify everything that I say because this is MY blog. But, should anyone take offense to it at any time...

On Being an At-Home College Student

For an 18 year old who’s never been away from home for more than a week at a time, the idea of staying home to attend college at a local university sounds somewhat appealing. I can sleep in my own bed, afford to have a car of my own, and not have to be far from my good friends who are still in high school. It would also be a lot cheaper for me in the long run. And I don’t have to do all of the ridiculous packing that other kids going away to college do. So I thought to myself, Why not? OU is a great school, it’s not as expensive as other universities, and it’s close to home. And in a few weeks, I’m proud to say that I will be a Golden Grizzly.

But nobody told me how terribly lonely it was going to be.

At least to start, I should clarify. As I’m saying goodbye to many of my college-bound friends, some of whom I’ve grown up with from elementary school, I can’t help but to feel that I am...
